The Great Stupa Sanchi Overview
The Great Stupa on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh, India is one of the oldest stone structures in India. Sanchi Stupa is an important Buddhist monument and complex. A hemispherical brick structure, the Stupa is surrounded by four gateways called Toranas, each representing love, trust, courage and peace. These gateways are beautifully crafted and sculptured. Sanchi Stupa attracts hundreds of visitors from across the world. Enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, it is counted among the best conserved ancient Stupas of central India. Sanchi is located at approx 13km from Vidisha, 49km from state capital Bhopal.
